Robin Hood's Bay
Home > Robin Hood's Bay | Huddled precariously on the rocks, Robin Hoods Bay or 'Bay' as it is known to locals, has always had a love/hate relationship with the sea. It originally offered smugglers the perfect hideaway with its maze of alleyways and inter-connecting houses; the layout of the village allowed contraband, mainly tea and spirits, to be moved quickly and stealthily without fear of detection from the King's men. However, due to steady erosion by the unforgiving sea, two hundred cottages have been lost in as many years and many are still under threat. | |
 | There are many theories about how the village acquired its name, but favourite among these relates to the famous 'Prince of Thieves' himself. Legend has it that the notorious outlaw, Robin Hood, kept several boats in the bay in case he needed a speedy escape from Nottingham to the continent. Yet due to the lack of documented evidence Robin Hoods Bay's past is shrouded in mystery. |
| Today, non-residents are denied vehicle access to the main village, but ample parking is available at the top of the hill. The walk down into 'Bay' can be a little strenuous but is well worth the effort. Take a seat in one of the welcoming cafes for a brief respite,or browse around the local shops. The Forge Gallery houses paintings, sculpture, ceramics and jewellery by local artists and craftsmen. The Bay's beautiful beach, with opportunities for sunbathing, crabbing and fossil hunting, makes it a family favourite all year round. | |
| For something a little different check out The Old Chapel, this charming building houses an interesting array of amethyst goods, books and a vegetarian Cafe. They are also supporters of Action Aid. Bay is a great place for children and the young at heart. There are hotels for a comfortable stay and guest houses and B n Bs with friendly atmosphere's. Self-catering accommodation is available in an assortment of holiday cottages and camping and caravan sites. Located north of Scarborough with good road links and the nearest station 4 miles away, Robin Hood's Bay is easily accessible. |
