The town is teeming with shops and tea-rooms but the heart of Ripon is the Church of St. Wilfrid's, founded over 1,300 years ago, which is now the impressive Ripon Cathedral. Its stunning architecture dates back to Saxon times, the Early English West Front is exceptional and the Cathedral has been the inspiration of artists and writers including Lewis Carroll and the poet Wilfred Owen. | Ripon policed its own streets for 1000 years and administered its own justice, even now the Hornblower can be heard setting the nightly watch around the four corners of the market place's Obelisk. For a humbling reminder of what it was like to be poor a hundred years ago, visit Ripon's former workhouse which is now a museum. Witness the harsh treatment of paupers on the C19th vagrants ward. The Police and Prison Museum is a Victorian house of correction with cells depicting crime and punishment. Experience the stocks, the pillory and the very small cells in which people were incarcerated. |
| For those who are looking for the excitement of the funfair, look no further than the 'Light Water Valley Theme Park'. You will need a full day to sample all the rides and attractions. Ripley Castle, home of the Ingilby family, stands at the heart of the Estate village. Norton Conyers, visited by Charlotte Bronte, is said to have been the house that Thornfield Hall in 'Jane Eyre' was based upon. Ripon boasts a good selection of restaurants and eateries including Chinese, Italian and Indian. |

There are some great places to stay in and around Ripon; in hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfasts, self-catering holiday cotages and camping and caravan sites. Located just off the A61 Ripon has excellent road and rail links to the A1(M). |
