Middleham

Home > Middleham

Middleham is most famous for its horse-racing roots and for the last 200 years the town has grown around the many training yards . Today there are 15 yards and it is a pleasure to see the horses going through the town in the morning on their way to the gallops. Situated in Wensleydale, nestling on the hillside between the River Cover and the River Ure just 2 miles from the busy market town of Leyburn, Middleham has magnificent castle ruins towering over clusters of old grey stone cottages, fine old Georgian and Victorian houses and its two cobbled market squares.Middleham
MiddlehamMiddleham was once the home of a young prince called Richard. He later went on to become Richard III after he married Anne, daughter of the powerful Richard Neville. It is said that Middleham was always his favourite home and the castle that stands in Middleham, once known as the ‘Windsor of the North’ can only enhance this claim as the scenery is magnificent.
Other attractions around Middleham include the very popular ‘Forbidden Corner’. This is a labyrinth of caves and mystery trails for everyone to explore. The visit takes a couple of hours, and provides great entertainment; it has recently been voted the best children’s attraction in Yorkshire. Visitors should pre-book; visit their website for more details, www.theforbiddencorner.co.uk. Lightwater Valley Theme park is very popoular and is in lower Wensleydale, just outside of Ripon. If booking online discounts are available. www.lightwatervalley.co.uk.
MiddlehamAs a busy market town, Middleham has plenty to offer visitors. Little art and craft shops line the streets and local artists show off their talents in quaint art galleries. There is a great selection of pubs and restaurants serving lovely food throughout the day. Accommodation is abundant in guest houses and B & Bs with great locations to see the horses on the gallops early morning. Holiday cottages set in endless fields offer secluded self-catering accommodation and camping and caravan sites are great for budget travellers. Located just 2 miles south of Leyburn on the A6108, and less than 20 miles north of Ripon; road access to Middleham is great and very well signposted.
