Halifax

Home > Halifax

There are some great architectural works in Halifax; The Halifax Piece Hall is where a lot of industry took place years ago. Today it houses the market and is a very popular place for locals and visitors. The Town Hall was built by the same person who built The Houses of Parliament, Charles Barry. The Duke of Wellington's Regiment Regimental Headquarters is based at Wellesley Park, in the old Museum Building and from a slightly different aspect Halifax was notorious for the 'Halifax Gibbet', an early form of the guillotine used to execute criminals by decapitation, and last used in 1650. A replica of the gibbet has been erected in Gibbet Street.Halifax
For the younger generation the museum ‘Eureka’ is situated in Halifax. Opened in 1992 by HRH Prince Charles, the museum has been very popular and offers children an interesting and hands on insight to science. The museum is open 10am-5pm every day and an admission fee is charged.(www.eurke.org.uk). It is possible to walk into the countryside from the town centre in a matter of minutes when you venture into one of Halifax's parks. These include Savile Park and People's Park with its beautifully restored statues and fountain. Close by, the dramatic Rishworth Moor in the West gives way to the lush Ryburn Valley.
As a busy town, Halifax has many shops and can cater very easily for the day or week visitor. There are some great pubs that offer bed and breakfast and guest houses too. Hotels can be found in the centre of town and holiday cottages providing self-catering accommodation for a bigger group can be found in and out of Halifax. Located close to Bradford and Leeds with good roads and rail links, there’s plenty to do in and around the area.
